HI, I’M KATE.

ARTIST & PHOTOGRAPHER.

I THINK OF PHOTOS AS STORIES.

And I think the best stories hide in the defining moments.

Something I’ve learned, though, is that defining moments don’t have to be the most exciting days in our lives. They are often the quiet moments; the in between; the average; the everyday that shapes us.

I find defining moments in a change in perspective. A road criss-crossed with tire tracks driven millions of times before, but one day feels more beautiful than you thought possible. I experienced an awakening to the beauty of the ordinary—a single moment can do that. Paradigm shifts. I search for these, dust them off, and catch them with my camera. Sometimes all you need is a fresh lens to look through.

When we capture these moments in a photo we can look back at the winding path that lead us to where we are now.

WHAT ABOUT MY STORY?

My mum and dad bought me my first film SLR when I was nine. It was a fifteen-minute drive to the nearest village, so I spent a lot of time outdoors. I experimented with negative space. I looked at our house as a frame and the wilderness around our home as a new world to explore. I found beauty in the quiet moments as a kid, and I guess that’s where this all began.

A few years, a marriage, a lot of photographs, and a couple of kids later, we live an hour from the Canadian Rockies in Calgary, Alberta—a new setting to frame my own family.

There’s Theo, our little boy. He’s a mischievous explorer with a desperate desire to investigate everything. His older sister, Oliva, is the thoughtful nature lover who makes friends with horses and spiders alike. She’s happiest playing in the sun. So naturally, we spend a lot of time outside.

We like to skip stones and race sticks down the river, playing follow the leader through the forest with my husband, Nicky, in the lead. And me—with my camera—documenting each skip and wink along the way.

This is how I live. This is my everyday. This is the story I hope to show you through my photos.
